Zum Inhalt

Knowledge loss is a phenomenon, that all organizations face at some point. Knowledge accumulates over time in experience that is bound to employees, and in the knowledge repositories the organization has. Knowledge loss is defined here as losing access to essential knowledge due to employee turnover, or not getting the knowledge into the organizational knowledge repositories. The point of interest in this definition is essential knowledge: the knowledge that is important to the organization needs to be identified in all the forms and locations that it resides in for the organization to be able to do any risk management measures with it. The knowledge risk assessment process thus begins with identifying knowledge assets by recognizing not only the documented knowledge within different systems of the organization but also the ways of knowledge sharing and transfer and the role of people and tacit knowledge within the knowledge system, and in how knowledge gets documented.

This talk briefly introduces the paper “Modifying Knowledge Risk Strategy Using Threat Lessons Learned from COVID-19 in 2020-21 in the United States” by Jennex, Durcikova and Ilvonen in European Journal of Knowledge Management 2022, and expands the discussion into how knowledge loss can be predicted and what are and should be the implications of the prediction.
