In Europe, the topic of standardisation is still little known and poorly understood. There is a striking lack of qualified experts, while China has for some time systematically integrated standardisation at all levels of education and now has a large pool of specialists in this field.
Both the European Commission’s Standardisation Strategy (2022) and the Austrian Standardisation Strategy (2024) explicitly aim to counteract this deficit.
The design of objects plays a major role in shaping the way we live. Standardisation is therefore a key factor in linking technical and social change. This requires not only technical expertise but also the active involvement of the humanities. We understand standardisation as in line with EU values and interests (Stand-EUVI).
The Netzwerk Normung (“Standardisation Network”) has been established recently to address this challenge on a long-term basis.
It brings together a diverse group of interested individuals from academia, business, politics and the standardisation community who wish to engage more actively in standardisation.
The network has grown out of the Horizon Europe project EDU4Standards.eu, in which the research network “Human Factor in Digital Transformation” is actively involved.
Our activities such as summer schools, ASD and EURAS are already documented (See the tiles below). Recently, we have submitted policy briefs to the European Commission and letters of recommendation to the Austrian Federal Government, calling for a sustained and coherent effort to promote education in standardisation.
The network is open to anyone who wishes to learn about standardisation, conduct research in this area and/or actively engage für standardisation.
